Blame it on the media — now more than ever, we’re being inundated with all things related to home design. From entire networks dedicated to buying homes, building homes, decorating homes — you name it — to flashy magazines (yes, this one included) and websites dedicated to inspirational home photography, everyone seems to be a custom-home enthusiast these days.
And with this enthusiasm comes a knowledge and new-found expertise on the topic. That’s right — everyone now has a design- or construction-savvy friend who loves to weigh in on everything from floor plan layouts, to beautiful room styles, to finishing materials. We, however, have more than 5,000 of them.
Enter Timber Home Living’s first-ever Readers’ Choice Awards. Back in July, we presented more than 150 entries in more than nine different categories to our more than 4,500 Facebook friends and had them vote for their favorites. The result? An entire section in our December issue dedicated to fantastic homes (both big and small), inviting rooms and outdoor spaces, and knock-your-socks-off architectural features and finishing materials that are sure to inspire.
And, of course, great rooms always top everyone’s list of favorite spaces. In fact, one of the main reasons people gravitate to a timber home is because of the wide-open feeling that comes from the unique frame. And that frame is almost showcased in the great room space. In Inside Style we discuss the history behind the great room (Did you know the concept dates back to medieval castles?), and share some tips and photographs to get you thinking about what kind of design will suit your style.
And that’s not all. Because of our Readers’ Choice Awards issue, we now have a better feel for what you (the real experts) are inspired by and searching for in a timber home. So, thank you for sharing your favorites with us, and filling us in on what you’re looking for in a dream house. As the only magazine on the market dedicated to timber frame homes and the people that are enthusiastic about them, we thank you. And please, keep the comments, questions and feedback coming here on the Timber Home Nation. After all, we’re listening, and we’d love to hear from you.
