Editor's Note: Small is Beautiful

There is nothing like a serious challenge to help you focus your thinking. This focus often leads to better conclusions than you might have considered otherwise. The challenge for many people today is how to get what they want in their dream home — a dream home that has been downsized to fit their new budget realities. It is causing people to sacrifice some grandiosity and instead to give other considerations a higher priority.Take Bill and Marise Craig, whose 16-by-19-foot weekend cabin wasn’t…See More

No solar panels, no clothes lines, no compost bins! Do you have to park your vehicle inside the garage all the time too? Sounds like you are owned by the Koch brothers. I'd get out of there fast. Your development is run by idiots. Tell the…

The Timber-Frame Shrine to Incompleteness

It might be time to get out the chisels and saws and build a timber frame. We moved into a new home two years ago. Well, it was new to us, but was celebrating its 25th birthday. There is a utility shed out back that keeps our gardening weapons, all manner of sharp objects for attacking the onslaught of nature in our yard. This little — and I do mean little — building is one of those home-center specials made of some undetermined metal that seemed to rust at the hint of rain. Last summer I…See More

Best Timber Homes of 2010

We're about to unveil the editors' picks of the Best Timber Homes of 2010. We've poured over hundreds — perhaps thousands — of photos of gorgeous timber homes that have come across our desks throughout the past year. The nine great timber frames we've chosen will be showcased in our special newsstand-only issue next month. The homes range from rustic to ridiculously contemporary and from relatively modest to mega-luxurious. One thing is for sure: timber framers might not be building quite as…See More
