"Bennett, Sorry for the very long delay answering. The unit I have was made by Honeywell. I believe it is supposed to be 80% efficient. As I said before, this past winter I could feel the temp drop when the unit was on, but some of that could be just…"

"Mike, Thank you for the reply and offer of horror stories. My crew and I installed our SIPs, and I agree, not rocket science, but plenty of room for error. I have found areas that did not get sealed properly (I'll take the hit for that since I…"

"One other important factor regardless of the SIPs that are being used is the installer/contractor. At the end of the day regardless of the SIPS manufacturer you choose, SIPS are "for the most part", 2 pieces of plywood with foam in the…"

"Steve, Thank you for the response. Let me apologize for not communicating my quandry clearly. I am acutely aware of the water vapor issues, not only how imperative they are in SIP homes, but also in stick homes built to today's tougher…"

"Hi You are discussing two interelated but seperate items according to the latest thinking in building science. First is managing interior water vapor. Energy Star requires a minimum of one Energy Star rated fan on a timer or humidistat switch. Best…"

"Thank you for the info Les. Some manufactures claim upwards of 90% efficiency, if I remember correctly, but those claims may be just that. I'll have to be careful when choosing. Whose system did you have installed? One website was honest enough…"

"Thank you for the compliment, Doreen. PineRidge produces a terrific product. We are very happy with it so far. The photos are of the early stages, we are ready for exterior siding now, and drywall was delivered today. If we were to do this process…"

"Hi, I believe, but not sure, that an HRV system is required under at least some circumstances by the IBC. I completed my personal timberframe/sips last Sept. Included was an HRV, and the inspector checked it out. Your question about using it for…"

"Those are some great timbers! We have built a barn on our property first and plan to build a log/timber combo home next year. Would love to learn more about energy efficiency before we commit too far! Great vehicle for learning!"

HRV or not HRV?

Not sure if HRV related subject is Design or Materials (probably both), so here goes. Our timber frame home in Steamboat Springs is well under way. Roof is complete, windows are in and let it snow! This is my first build and if I've only learned one thing, it is that I don't know much. One thing I don't understand is why HRV systems aren't required in our climate zone.We are all aware of mold issues and how serious this is. We are all building homes that are more and more air tight, super…See More

Bennett,

I am happy to see that you joined this great network. I too will never forget about the time we spent in Colorado chowing down the whole side of a cow. I am glad to see this project is finally coming along. Will you be attending our Colorado show again this fall? If so, I hope to see you there.
