read about these in the recent 2010 issue - anyone know anything about these? Are they something you can add to a non-timber home to make it appear like one?
next question.....our new home has rafters and blown-in insulation in the attic (good access to attic) - I would love to make the living room/kitchen into a Great Room by opening up the wall between the two (inserting supportive posts where needed) and opening up the ceiling. Is this a crazy idea....or do-able? If the rafters are the 'skeleton' of the roof, how does one eliminate them and still keep the ceiling structuraly sound? Also thought of using faux beams to surround the existing rafters, thus kinda making them look like supportive trusses. Can you tell I'm desperate to have my home look like a Timber Frame home???????
Anyone's thoughts?
Greetings Kathryn, I am going to bow out of this thread. Heirloom Timber Framing only works heavy timber while specializing in timber framing.
Although, from the sounds of it you might be on to something with faux beams in regards to price, weight and ease of installation with your special case.
I wish you the most fun on your project adventure.
thank you so much Ford....appreciate all you guys listening to me ramble on and giving me advice on how to accomplish what I want for this house. I've learned a lot.....and from those who truly know what they're talking about. Much appreciated.
Hi Kathryn - We might be able to help you out - we are in Mount Forest, ON (1 hr. N of Guelph on Hwy 6) and will travel all over ON. We have done full timber frame, hybrid timber frames as well as timber decorative trusses - no project is too big or too small. If you would like to speak with us directly please call us toll free at 866-506-6626.
Thanks,
Pauline
PineRidge Timberframe
thanks Mike - we used to live in Durham, near Varney, so I know where Mt Forest is.
I will get back to you when we are considering the project - haven't yet moved in so it will be a few months!
No worries Kathryn! Just give us a call when you are ready. We offer no obligation consultations - where we can come to your home and discuss what you are hoping to achieve, the costs involved and offer ideas as to what may or may not work (based on the structure of the home).
Just a bit about us - PineRidge Timberframe is originally from London, ON and moved to Mount Forest about 4 years ago (closer to cottage country where the majority of our projects were going). We are a relatively small company but take pride in all of our work. Many PineRidge homes, cottages, additions, gazebos and porches have been built throughout ON - some are full timber frames, hybrids, decorative details and others have "non-structural" timbers installed to give the "look and feel" of a timber frame into an existing conventionally built home. Feel free to check out our website at www.pineridgetimberframe.com. We look forward to the possibility of working together in the near future.
thanks Mike - sounds like what I am looking for....and relatively close to where we will be. I am particularaly interested in the decorative details and the non-structural timbers for the look and feel of timber framing.
So my question to you is, have you ever opened up an existing roof (that has existing rafters) and been able to put up trusses (decorative if structural not needed)? Or my other thought was to use the faux beams and cover the existing rafters to make them look like timber trusses? Is this feasible or not?
In order to answer this question the right way - we would need to do a site visit to see what would work best. We have done something similar in the past - but each scenario is different so until we actually see what we are getting into it I can't really say what would work best and if it is feasible.
fair enough! will have to first convince my husband that this is a good idea!!!!??? So...yah, it will be a few months!! but you are the closest and I like what you've said so I'll be in touch at some point. Thanks for your expertise.
I will look forward to hearing from you, when you are ready. At the initial home visit / inspection - you and your husband can ask whatever questions you have and I can go over rough pricing, what it will entail, what your options are, time frames, etc. that way you both can have a better understanding at the beginning and then decide where to go from there. There is no fee for the initial consultation.
