If you are interested in timber framing, then almost any so-called "stock plan" will not give you either the aesthetics or the practicality that a timber frame can provide. Timber frame builders do offer plans and these would be acceptable, but not those from your local or national tract home builders.
In our case, we designed our own home based on our own particular needs and interests. Except for bathrooms and closet, the building has no interior walls, which we like just fine. But then, we are empty-nesters with no need to hide from children. One suggestion I would make is avoid size for size sake, and stay away from rigid "all homes must have three-four bedrooms" mindset. Design to your needs and budget, not to some fixed ideal. After all, Isn't that why you are interested in timber framing in the first place?
Your site, sun-orientation and special needs should determine basic footprint. Allow a plan to express the openness that timber framing lends itself to. Do the usual traffic-flow study, look at other timber frames, then start drawing a plan. WES LODER
